Janathon Day 16

The gym continues to be far too full for my liking and I start today's workout by having a girly tantrum because not only are there no treadmills but RP has managed to bag one and nearly everyone else but him is walking and I hate it when people only walk for 2 minutes and get off because by then I have huffed off and gone and used another piece of apparatus and some other person nicks my treadmill!

Tonight I had a plan though. I would sit on the cycle machine which is right next to the treadmills and I would stare at the person next to me until I made them feel so uncomfortable that they got off and I could have their treadmill. I feel fine with this approach as any true hardcore runner would not let someone staring at them put them off so if the person did get off then they wouldn't be a real runner and that would be fine. As it was the guy lasted approximately 1 minutes before he could take it no more and got off! Mwhahahahahahaha!

So on I hopped, set the mill for an hour, cranked up the tunes, and started the slog. Then my towel fell off and whilst trying to catch it I hit the safety stop button and managed to stop my treadmill after only 5 minutes! Oops! Take 2 went a bit better and I managed to make it past the 5 minute mark without looking like a complete incompetent.

I spent most of the run singing along to the tunes in my head and quietly judging those around me. I know I shouldn't but it is a guilty pleasure of mine and in my opinion if you are able to come into the gym with make up on, your hair not tied back but styled long and leave looking exactly the same as when you came in, then you aren't working hard enough. I take pride in my red face, sweat soaked shirt and the fact that I have to have a towel with me in the gym otherwise I'm liable to short circuit the machinary with the amount of fluid that comes off me.

At the 50 minuted mark that niggly voice in the back of my head started telling me that I should have a little walk, I'd earned it, it wouldn't matter if I only walked for 2 mins. I did really want to stop but then I did a quick evalutation, I wasn't out of breath, I didn't have a stitch, my ankles felt fine, my legs weren't sore. It is said time and time again but it is so true, so much of running is a mental effort rather than a physical one. So I didn't let the niggly voice win and I powered through and completed the hour (I had planned to round it up to 10k but the machine wouldn't let me up the time past 60 mins!).

Went to meet RP in the steam room who had run 7k in 40 mins and burnt over 1000 calories! Why can't I burn that many calories! Apparently it's because he runs fast whereas I just plod along! Oh well, one day I will be gazelle like and be able to run 7 minute miles just for funzies!

Great blog - one of the reasons I gave up the gym was precisely because there were never enough dreadmills. I always used to enjoy a good people assassination - although my daughter used to think I was checking out the guy candy - great effort tonight & the steam room was a great reward.

Kudos for slogging it out on the treadmill for a whole hour, I don't know how you do it.

I just cannot get on with it however hard I try. Give me e cross trainer any day!

You are definitely not alone on the treadmill front - people walking/generally not trying annoys me (and quite few others it would seem) too.
Good mileage - well done!

Never you mind that speedy RP, just be glad for your own pace, your happy motivation & no leg/foot/knee/ankle injuries holding you back! Way to stare down those walkers hogging the treadmills, too, ha ha. My gym has a circular track around the fitness floor & I think if you're not walking at least 4.0 speed, you should not get a treadmill... but... I try to remember that someday, I will be old or recuperating from some serious illness or surgery & might want some time on the treadmill. That said, I'm not that old or unfortunate yet, so step down, Grandpa! ha ha ha ha (half kidding) I have to say, the longest I've ever run on a mill is 3.5 mi. so I tip my hat to your longevity! I get too bored to do any kind of distance, music aside. Outdoors, my longest distance so far is 10 mi., not boring at all :-) Keep up the good work!
